Christian Petzold was an organist in Dresden in the early eighteenth century. Little is known about his life and his music. Pianists know his name all the same: two minuets from the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach, the 1725 collection belonging to Johann Sebastian Bach's second wife, long played as Bach's own, are now attributed to him. They are the minuets in G major and G minor, BWV Anh. 114 and 115, which the catalogue presents from the Bach-Gesellschaft edition.
The two pieces make a pair and are played in that order. The Minuet in G major sets a left hand in steady notes beneath the tune, with a few leaps in both hands; its twelve ornaments, mostly mordents, belong on the beat without delaying it. The Minuet in G minor keeps the same regular triple-time phrasing and as many ornaments, but of another kind, and the raised F-sharp comes back often: learn the piece without ornaments first, then add them one at a time.
