The piece
Two bars of slow chords open this nocturne like a curtain, and return unchanged to close it. In between, a melody in four beats unfolds over a steady accompaniment, then the metre switches to 12/8: the music darkens, gathers momentum and slides towards F-sharp minor. The opening theme then comes back, marked Appassionato. The score comes from Maurice Schlesinger's original Paris edition, with a handful of notes adapted by Noctave.
The right hand carries dense embroidery: 58 ornaments in all, including 17 mordents, 25 grace notes and 8 trills. Each one has to slip into the line without delaying it; keep it light and return to the melody at once. The left hand takes every large leap in the piece (226), from bass note to chord: look where it lands before you play, then let the gesture become automatic. With four flats and almost six minutes of music, the piece also asks for calm stamina: the 12/8 section is not a race, so keep a steady pulse beneath the turbulence. Wait mode helps you place the ornaments without tempo pressure.
